It’s good to be unique, no?
And we think it’s good to have a unique name, too. Black Tomato, for example, is
the name of a refined variety of fruit found in
rare locations and climates. All very symbolic, you
understand, hinting at the fact that we’re a little different, a bit exotic, and
always provocative. It’s unusual, but it sums us up quite nicely.
Having said that, we’d like
to take a moment to consider the plight of the 9-year old girl in New
Zealand
who was christened… Talula Does The
Hula From Hawaii. We kid you not. Unique? Err, we hope
so. But poor little Talula (sorry, Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii) doesn’t much like
her name, and goes by the name of “K” amongst her friends. The issue came to
light during a custody hearing in the city of New
Plymouth, North Island, where the
judge was apparently fed up with the trend of parents giving children bizarre
names, condemning the “very poor
judgment this child's parents have shown in choosing this name”. Worried that it could expose her to
embarrassment and teasing, he gave her permission to change the name she hates
so much. Parents these days, eh?
